Phil Roberts retired from the Royal Air Force in 2001 as a Group Captain following 25 years service in the air traffic control specialisation, during which time he served at a wide variety of locations both in the U.K. and overseas. Following a period on secondment from the MOD to the UK Civil Aviation Authority from 1999 to 2001, Phil joined the CAA full-time in the Directorate of Airspace Policy as the Assistant Director with particular responsibility for the regulation of airspace and navigation matters, aeronautical information and aviation meteorology.
Following an internal re-organisation in 2013, he now heads the Airspace, Air Traffic Management (ATM) and Aerodromes (AAA) Capability Team within the Safety & Airspace Regulation Group. Phil is also active in the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and on European ATM matters and currently holds the chairmanship of the ICAO European Regional Air Navigation Planning Group (EANPG), comprised of 56 member States covering the area from Ireland to the eastern seaboard of the Russian Federation.
For the period 2010 to 2013, Phil was also the chair of the Eurocontrol Agency Advisory Body (AAB) that has broad representation from all areas of the European aviation community and he has frequently represented the U.K. in the European Commission Single Sky Committee (SSC) and in the ICAO Headquarters on air navigation matters. Phil is an active private pilot and has been a Member of the Royal Aeronautical Society and its Air Transport Group since 2001. He was appointed as on Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to the airline industry in July 2011.
